About the Thomas D. Egan Glen Rock Post 850 VFW
Our History
This history is a work in process. We are trying to get information on the original post that ceased existence prior to 1994 when our current post was reestablished, as the Glen Rock Memorial Post 850.
Some of the original founders of the new Post were Thomas Egan, Maxwell Singer, Frank Kozar, Ara Dedeian, Richard Agnello, Jerome Berman, and Neil Finn. In 2011, with the passing of our past Post Commander, Thomas D. Egan, we applied to the VFW and the State to rename our Post. The VFW approved the name change. Thus, we are now referred to as the Thomas D. Egan Glen Rock Post 850 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
Currently, our post consists of approximately sixty members. We have had many distinguished members through the years that served in WWII, and the wars since. One member was on the first landing at Omaha Beach; another was a bomber pilot; and one was a prisoner of war when the Germans captured him. Sadly, many of these members, as well as the Korean War vets, have passed away over the years. Many of our current members served in Vietnam and did not receive a warm welcome when they returned home. Our post is a post that has “welcomed them home”. Some of our members have served valiantly in one of the Gulf wars and will be the future of our post moving forward. We encourage their membership.
Our Post supports many Veteran causes such as The Fisher House, the VFW National Home for Children, and the Paramus Veterans Home. We have supported the troops directly with phone cards, the veteran homeless, and the families of veterans. Annual essay contests are sponsored to promote patriotism among our young citizens.

Thomas D. Egan, who our post has taken the name of, was a resident of Glen Rock. Unfortunately, Tom left us February 1, 2011, at the young age of 66 years old. Tom was born in Jersey City and raised in North Bergen, NJ, and resided in Glen Rock since 1967. He was an army veteran who proudly served during the Vietnam War. Tom was a member and past commander of V.F.W. Post 850 and a member and past commander of American Legion Post 145 both of Glen Rock. As an active, generous and unwavering supporter of veteran causes, Tom was a member of the Family Readiness Group of the Teaneck Armory. He served as a member of the Homeless Project, volunteer with Eva’s Kitchen and a recipient of the 2009 Jubilee Award. Prior to retiring in 2004, he was a manager with the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company in Mahwah for more than twenty-five years.
